| OKANOGAN LOOP DRIVE
Washington
BACK TO TRAVEL INDEX
The Okanogan, Washington's storied gold mining and ranching country in the N.E. part of the state is strikingly beautiful place to photograph; pleasantly quiet, lightly populated, and welcoming. This drive was conceived to drive secondary roads in a counter clockwise loop exploring the best of the least. While the first shot across from Roslyn to the Pend Orielle River north of Spokane is freeway, it need not be. You can do this drive in two days. Our week felt short, and the hop along the freeway saved time crossing largely desert land. From the Pend Orielle, the route is north to the town of Ione, then east across the northern part of the state through Sherman Pass, Colville, Curlew, Cheesaw, Oroville, and finally down to Tonasket where a secondary road could lead back to the Pend Oreille close the loop. We opted for a longer loop by following Highway 20 to Winthrop, WA then skirting the Columbia River to Wenatchee and over Blewett Pass back to Roslyn. The trip includes arid rangeland, pine forests, mountain passes, lakes, rivers, ghost towns, and more. Travel and lifestyle photography from Douglas Orton, Seattle, Washington
