All that remains of Dickman Mill, a lumber mill established 1889 as a shingle mill by Abraham Young, on Tacoma's Commencement Bay, are ruins of piers and foundations, and the namesake Dickman Mill Park. Commencement Bay with the Cascade Mountains in background, as seen from the south shore and Foss Waterway. Commencement Bay's history of industry and shipping has led it to designation as a Superfund Cleanup Site and one of the most polluted waterways in the nation.
